  • Immunosuppression and Infection Risk: By suppressing your immune system, CELLCEPT makes you more susceptible to infections. This can include common colds and flu, as well as more serious infections.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: CELLCEPT can cause severe birth defects or miscarriage. It is absolutely contraindicated in women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.
  • Cancer Risk: Long-term use of immunosuppressants, including CELLCEPT, can increase the risk of developing certain types of cancer, particularly skin cancer and lymphoproliferative disorders. Regular skin checks and monitoring by your doctor are important.
  • Gastrointestinal Issues: CELLCEPT can cause gastrointestinal problems, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain. In rare cases, it can lead to more serious conditions like intestinal perforation or bleeding.
  • Blood Disorders: CELLCEPT can affect your blood cell counts, potentially leading to anemia, low white blood cell counts (increasing infection risk), or low platelet counts (increasing bleeding risk). Your doctor will monitor your blood work regularly.
  • Hypersensitivity Reactions: Allergic reactions can occur. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms like rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing.

How does CELLCEPT work?

CELLCEPT (mycophenolate mofetil) works by suppressing your immune system, specifically by inhibiting the production of certain white blood cells that can attack your body’s own tissues or a transplanted organ.

How should I take CELLCEPT?

Take CELLCEPT exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It’s usually taken with or without food. Swallow the capsules whole and do not crush, chew, or break them. It is typically taken twice a day.

How long will I need to take CELLCEPT?

The duration of CELLCEPT treatment depends entirely on your medical condition. For transplant patients, it’s usually a lifelong medication. For autoimmune diseases, it may be for a specific period or as needed. Your doctor will determine this.

What precautions should I take to avoid infections while on CELLCEPT?

Practice good hand hygiene, avoid sick people, get vaccinated (discuss which vaccines are safe with your doctor as some may not be recommended or effective while on immunosuppressants), and report any signs of infection to your doctor promptly.

What are the most serious risks of taking CELLCEPT?

The most serious risks include increased susceptibility to infections, an increased risk of certain cancers, and severe birth defects if taken during pregnancy.
