Indication:Kineret is a biopharmaceutical medication used for treating the conditions caused due to deficiency of Interleukin-1 receptor.

 Kineret is an interleukin-1 receptor antagonist and it is approved by FDA for following therapeutic indications:

  • Active Rheumatoid Arthritis:  KINERET is indicated for the reduction in signs and symptoms and slowing the progression of structural damage in moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (RA), in patients 18 years of age or older who have failed 1 or more disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). KINERET can be used alone or in combination with DMARDs other than Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) blocking agents.
  • Cryopyrin-Associated Periodic Syndromes (CAPS): KINERET is indicated for the treatment of Neonatal-Onset Multisystem Inflammatory Disease (NOMID).
  • Deficiency of Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist (DIRA): KINERET is indicated for the treatment of Deficiency of Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist (DIRA).

Strength: 100 mg/0.67 ml solution in a single use prefilled syringe. 

Dosage:                     

Rheumatoid Arthritis  100 mg/day administered daily by subcutaneous injection
Cryopyrin-Associated Periodic Syndromes (CAPS) 1-2 mg/kg daily for NOMID patient
Deficiency of Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist (DIRA) 1-2 mg/kg daily for patients with DIRA

Side effects:

  1. Upper Respiratory Tract Infection
  2. Reaction at injection site
  3. Joint pain
  4. Fever
  5. Skin rash

Storage & Handling:

  1. Store in the refrigerator at 2° to 8°C (36°F to 46°F).
  2. Do not shake
  3. Protect  from light.
  1. Do not initiate treatment with Kineret if a patient develops infection as it may become severe after continuous administration of it.
  2. It is not recommended to use Kineret with Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) blockers.
  3. Hypersensitivity reactions may be caused and so immediate discontinuation and treatment are required. Patients with DIRA may be at higher risk of allergic reactions, especially in the early stages of treatment.
  4. Live vaccines should not be given while on Kineret treatment.
  5. Neutrophil counts should be checked before starting Kineret treatment.
