Elosulfase Alfa

Elosulfase Alfa
Generic Name/API:Elosulfase alfa
Packaging:Each vial contains 5mg elosulfase alpha in 5 ml of solution (1mg/ml) in a single dose vial.
Storage:2°C to 8°C
Dosage:2 mg per kg given intravenously (IV) over a minimum range of 3.5 to 4.5 hours, based on infusion volume, once every week.
Strength:One vial of 5 mL contains 5 mg elosulfase alpha.
Indication:Vimizim is an enzyme replacement therapy used to treat Mucopolysaccharidosis type IVA (MPS IVA), also known as Morquio A syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. People with MPS IVA lack a specific enzyme needed to break down certain complex sugars in the body, leading to their buildup and causing skeletal abnormalities, joint problems, and other serious health issues. It is administered as a weekly intravenous (IV) infusion.

Vimizim or Elosulfase alfa is indicated for the treatment of patients with Mucopolysaccharidosis type IVA (MPS IVA), also known as Morquio A syndrome, a rare and inherited lysosomal storage disorder. This condition is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfatase (GALNS), which is responsible for breaking down specific complex carbohydrates known as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), including keratan sulfate.Vimizim is used as an enzyme replacement therapy to provide the missing GALNS enzyme, aiming to reduce GAG buildup, slow disease progression, and improve physical endurance and daily functioning in patients diagnosed with MPS IVA.

Strength:

  • Vimizim for injection is available as 5mg of elosulfase alpha in 5ml solution in a single dose vial.

Dosage:

  • The recommended dosage is 2 mg per kg, administered as an intravenous infusion over a period of 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on the infusion volume, once weekly.
  • It is advised to give antihistamines, with or without antipyretics, 30 to 60 minutes before starting the infusion.

Side effects:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Stomach pain
  • Fever
  • Chest discomfort

  • Protect from light
  • Hypersensitivity reactions are common with Vimizim; therefore, antihistamines, with or without antipyretics, should be given before the infusion. Discontinue Vimizim immediately if severe reactions occur.

  • Patients with a fever or respiratory illness at the time of infusion may have a higher risk of serious, potentially life-threatening hypersensitivity reactions.

  • Cases of spinal or cervical cord compression (SCC) have been reported in patients treated with Vimizim. Individuals with MPS IVA should be closely monitored for symptoms of SCC and receive appropriate medical care.

FAQ

Vimizim is a prescription medicine used as enzyme replacement therapy for people with Mucopolysaccharidosis type IVA (MPS IVA), also known as Morquio A syndrome. It helps replace a missing enzyme in the body that’s needed to break down certain sugars.

Vimizim is used to treat MPS IVA, a rare genetic disorder caused by a lack of the enzyme GALNS (N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfatase). Without this enzyme, harmful substances build up in the body, leading to bone abnormalities, short stature, joint problems, and other health complications.

Vimizim is given through a weekly intravenous (IV) infusion. The infusion typically takes about 4 hours.

Vimizim should not be used in patients who have experienced life-threatening allergic reactions to elosulfase alfa or any of its ingredients, unless the benefits outweigh the risks and it is done under strict medical supervision.

Vimizim is usually a long-term therapy to help manage symptoms and disease progression. Regular follow-up and monitoring are essential.
